To a certain extent that's true, BUT in the case of ancient Greece it's much more two-way. Without the city and its prosperous classes, there would be no one to be the armored core of an army to defend those farms. They die or become enslaved.

Ancient Greek and Roman cities were too small to have separate neighborhoods divided by social class as modern American and Canadian cities do. Also, why all the hundreds of escavated Classical Houses were upper class neightborhood houses while the Archaic houses were small and squalid, hence lower class houses?

I am guessing Egyptian Thebes was a lot older and had a Egyptian name and when the Ptolemies took over Egypt they renamed what ever the Egyptian Thebes was originally called Thebes.
