Jane Harris (1956 – 2022) was a British painter. [1] Harris was born in 1956, and spent her formative years in Dorset. She began her art studies at Bournemouth College of Art. She went on to the Slade School of Art.

Harris was a painter who reduced to a minimum the elements in her work, working on a large and small scale. At Anderson O’Day she restricted her format to that of an ellipse with fluctuating edges placed within a space of a different colour.

Jane Harris’ clear voice, her words carefully chosen, accompanies film footage of the precise gestures of the artist in her studio, with still images of the works (seen in entirety and also in close up to show the reflective textures).

I am a self-taught mixed media artist specializing in cut fabric, paper and acrylic. I rely on instinct and intuition to guide me to produce art that evokes a sense of curiosity and playfulness. I believe that the subject isn’t what really matters-it’s the language of a painting-the play between shapes, tones, colors, textures, edges and lines.

Jane Harris is a master at mixed media collage. Her playful designs with an abstract Modern edge carries the viewer away from her use of paper, fabric and acrylic paints into a surrealist world of color and shape. Her images delight the eye and inspire.

She was one of Britain’s most significant abstract painters, who for 30 years explored, through a set of self-imposed rules, the perceptual qualities of the ellipse. Since 2006 she had lived and worked in rural Périgord, France, with her husband, the sculptor Jiří Kratochvil, and their son.
