Jun 26, 2023 · A historic Art Deco theater in downtown Ventura that entrepreneurs hoped to revive as a swing dance hall was severely damaged Thursday in an early-morning fire. The blaze gutted the long-shuttered Mayfair Theater, leaving only the building’s thick outside walls, ticket office and elaborate neon marquee.

Jul 8, 2004 · VENTURA, CA — The S. Charles Lee designed Mayfair Theater will be demolished to make room for a new housing development in August. The building was gutted by fire three years ago, but the marquee and facade still stand.

The Mayfair Theatre was designed by S. Charles Lee and built in 1940. In later years, it was known as the Pussycat Theatre. The theatre was demolished in 2004 after damage from a fire. This marquee sign was saved and was stored in a vacant lot for many years. In 2013, the sign was removed for restoration.

In the early 1990’s it served as a performance “Coffee House” and dance club. A fire in 2000 destroyed the interior and much of the exterior details. The last of Ventura’s Art Moderne buildings, the Mayfair was demolished in 2004 to build residential condominiums (pictured below).

Jul 18, 2016 · It is the original marquee and sign from the Mayfair Movie Theater. After a fire in 2004, the building itself was torn down, but the sign was kept with the idea of one day being able to bring it back to life.
