Hurricane Erin has weakened to a Category 1 storm after lashing North Carolina's Outer Banks with rough waves and coastal flooding, and bringing a threat of dangerous waves and potentially deadly rip currents to the East Coast.

Hurricane Erin is entering the first stages of a post-tropical transition as it continues to move away from the eastern coast of the United States.

Hurricane Erin continued to track away from the United States on Friday, and attention is turning to two other potential storms in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Hurricane Center thinks both of the systems could become tropical depressions soon. And one seems to be on a path that those in the Caribbean will need to watch.

Strong winds and waves from Hurricane Erin have battered Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard as dangerous rip currents continue to threaten from the Carolinas to New England.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said Atlantic beaches in Suffolk County would remain closed to swimmers through Saturday morning due to hazardous rip currents from the storm that are expected to remain over the weekend. Earlier in the day, the department had said the closures would last until Saturday night.

Erin never made landfall and caused no widespread damage to infrastructure despite being twice the size of an average hurricane. But the turtles were not so lucky.
