BARC took in more than 20,000 animals in 2024 with a daily kennel capacity of 400. Nearly 20% of those animals were euthanized — up from 4% in 2020 but significantly down from 57% in 2012.

BARC implemented policy changes meant to increase oversight over dog rescues after reports of abandoned, abused or otherwise mistreated animals, Houston's municipal animal shelter announced recently.

In 2022, BARC had a little over 16,000. The shelter has a little over 350 dogs and 109 cats ready for adoption as of this week. “We’re an open intake shelter.

BARC will be among the 400 shelters across 45 states to offer free adoption for kittens as well as adult cats and dogs during the event, which runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 17.
