The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) responded to the attack Tuesday afternoon. A husband and wife were canoeing in about 2.5 feet of water when they went over the alligator.

According to FWC and public records, from 1973 to 2023, alligators have killed 30 people across the state. Including Peckham, 3 of those deaths were in Pinellas County.
