The Ross Fork Fire in Idaho is threatening homes and cabins near Alturas Lake. The wildfire was originally sparked by lightning in mid-August, but conditions has worsened over the weekend.

The Ross Creek Fire in central Idaho grew to 26,020 acres Tuesday night, threatening structures and forcing evacuations in nearby Smiley Creek and Alturas Lake, officials said.

Alturas is about 21 miles south of Stanley off Idaho 75. Size: Redfish Lake is 4.5 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide. Alturas Lake is about 2 miles long and almost a mile wide.

Getting There: Drive south on Idaho 75 from Stanley about 21 miles to the Alturas Lake turnoff. Take the road to Alturas Lake. Go past the lake and continue on a dirt road after the pavement ends.
