Dominion Energy, Energy Northwest, and X-energy Reactor Company LLC signed three new individual agreements with Amazon to support the development of nuclear energy projects, including enabling the construction of several new small modular reactors (SMRs).

Amazon announced at its headquarters Wednesday a deal with Dominion Energy to develop a small modular reactor in Virginia.

The digital retail and web services company led a $500 million investment in X-energy and will support the development of more than 600 MW of SMR capacity in Washington and Virginia.

Amazon backs 5 GW of X-energy SMRs by 2029, starting with a 4-unit plant in Washington. Amazon and Dominion will also explore SMR deployment in Virginia to meet growing power demand.

The deals illustrate efforts by technology companies to meet the electricity demands of artificial intelligence.

Dominion Energy Virginia and Amazon have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore innovative new development structures that would help advance potential Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear development in Virginia.

The cloud computing and retail giant signed a deal to buy electricity generated by small modular nuclear reactors. Put Amazon on the list of big technology firms embracing new nuclear technologies to fuel their data centers.

Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Jeff Bezos's e-commerce juggernaut Amazon, said on Wednesday that it will invest $500 million in small nuclear reactors to provide electricity it will need for exp
