To show how little they care about TikTok’s ties to Beijing, people in the United States are downloading one of China’s most popular apps.

As Supreme Court justices ponder the future of TikTok in the United States, a growing number of American social media users have responded by moving to an unlikely alternative: Xiaohongshu, a hugely popular social media app in China.

Users who have the TikTok app on their phone will still be able to access it after Jan. 19. However, because the ban would prevent Apple and Google from providing the app with necessary updates, TikTok would quickly break down and become unusable, leading Americans to look for an alternative app.

Six days ahead of a possible ban in the U.S., TikTok users have begun to download Chinese app, RedNote, skyrocketing it to the No. 1 spot in Apple's App Store. The Supreme Court will make a final ruling on the measure by Jan.

TikTok plans to shut U.S. operationsof its social media app on Sunday when a federal ban is set to take effect, barring a last-minute reprieve, people familiar with the matter said. The app is used by 170 million Americans.

Massive social media app TikTok could be banned in the US unless its Chinese parent company sells it by Sunday. At the time of writing, the app remains active in the United States. The proposed ban was enacted by Congress with bipartisan supportin April.

Some TikTok users aren't waiting until the upcoming Jan. 19 ban to test out other short-form video sharing apps, but instead of Meta's social media sites or the Fediverse, they're swarming to other Chinese-owned mobile software platforms.
