Wendelstein 7-X, located in Greifswald, is the world’s largest operational stellarator — a type of fusion reactor that uses powerful external magnets to confine superheated plasma.
The D-shaped cross section is wound with high-temperature superconducting tape, which when energized, generates a powerful magnetic field that will contain and compress the superheated plasma.
These magnets are key to containing and controlling the superheated plasma—a state of matter above 100 million degrees Celsius—inside the machine to release massive energy.
