President Donald Trump has unveiled the $175 billion “Golden Dome,” a proposed U.S. missile defence system inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, aiming to neutralise missile threats—including hypersonic weapons—through a space-based shield by 2029.

An idea for a space-based boost-phase defence system called Brilliant Pebbles was proposed towards the end of the 1980s. Rather than having large satellites with multiple missiles, it entailed having around 1,000 small individual missiles in orbit. It would have also used about 60 orbiting sensors called Brilliant Eyes to detect launches.

In his speech at the West Point commencement, President Trump promised that a Golden Dome missile defense system ... would be a tall order, military experts said.
