The New York Yankees have a need at second base after they let Gleyber Torres walk. They could plug DJ LeMahieu in at second base, but he would not be much of an upgrade. They could trade for a young Kansas City Royals star.

The Yankees reportedly did not offer Gleyber Torres a contract offer before the two-time All-Star signed with the Tigers.

The New York Yankees were linked to Jurickson Profar, a potential Gleyber Torres replacement predicted to land a $45 million deal.

Torres said his focus moved beyond the Yankees immediately after the World Series when he began hearing from other teams.

The MLB offseason has already produced a handful of big moves, but there are still some great options available on the market for teams to scoop up. One of them came off the board on Friday morning, though, as Gleyber Torres ended up signing with the Detroit Tigers after the New York Yankees let him hit the open market.

A return to the Yankees was not in the cards for Gleyber Torres. The second baseman said the Yankees were not particularly aggressive during his free agency before he signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers late last week. “I didn’t really have any offer from them,” Torres said during an introductory Zoom call.

On Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network reported that Torres had reached agreement with the Detroit Tigers on a free-agent contract. It's a one-year, $15 million deal, per MLB.com. Torres, who just turned 28, became an All-Star in his first two Yankees seasons, topping out with 38 homers, 90 RBI and an .872 OPS in 2019.
