This is not the first time the ancient tribal art has been targeted. In 2012, vandals used electric generators and power saws to remove large slabs of the rock face containing numerous petroglyphs.

The damage to the stone carvings, some of which date back 7,000 years, was discovered at three separate sites at the Volcanic Tableland, north of Bishop.
