Portland residents Richard Melling and his wife were out for a morning walk across the Sellwood Bridge on Wednesday when they encountered a surprising sight: a small, pure-white animal that left them questioning what they had just seen.

An Arctic fox was discovered roaming the streets of Portland, Oregon, and left the community baffled as to how it could have gotten there. Originally, an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman suggested to OPB.

Veterinarians are working to nurse an Arctic fox back to health and find it a permanent home, likely in a zoo or a wildlife refuge. Driving the news: Last week, a video of the fox on Reddit spurred speculation that it could be an albino red or gray fox.
