The U.S. Department of Education announced on Monday that it will begin collecting on defaulted student loan payments starting in two weeks.

After a 30-day notice, the department will begin garnishing wages for borrowers in default. Loan holders who don't make payments for nine months go into default, which is reported on credit scores, according to the Federal Student Aid office.

“Borrowers will now be expected to repay their loans, and those who don’t will face involuntary collections,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Tuesday. “The government can and will collect federal student loan debt by withholding money from borrowers, tax refunds, federal pensions and even their wages.”
