The U.S. Open mixed doubles competition will now be played before the singles main draw, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said on Tuesday as it announced an overhaul of the category's format and an increase in prize money.

The U.S. Open is moving its mixed doubles championship to the week before the tournament begins, hoping a revamped format and $1 million prize will persuade top singles players to chase a Grand Slam doubles title.

The USTA says the changes will showcase doubles to more people. The discipline's stars fear that they will not get to be part of the show.

Tennis legend Paul McNamee is not a fan of the U.S. Open’s “reimagined” format for mixed doubles. McNamee, who won four Grand Slam men’s doubles titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles, posted on social media: “Sets to 4 games in a Grand Slam?

Based on the new plan, the 2025 US Open mixed doubles matches will be played on August 19 and 20. The main draw of 2025 US Open will start on August 24.
