Rep. David Valadao was one of the deciding votes in favor of a spending bill passed in the U.S. House that proposes cutting $700 billion from the Medicaid program.

The provision is a result of a last-minute change to the bill before its passage out of the House early Thursday.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Delegates advanced a mega bundle of bills designed to shave billions from the federal budget, which Democrats and advocates have said will take resources from the nation’s most vulnerable citizens and hinder social safety nets.

The bill is part of a broader effort to curb waste and fraud in the program, which provides health coverage to more than 1.8 million low-income Louisianans.
