Dozens of Florida municipalities have decided to stop adding floride to its drinking water over concerns the practice may be affect the cognitive ability of kids. Similar votes will soon be on tap in Clearwater and Manatee County.

The latest fight to remove fluoride from drinking water arrived in one of Florida’s biggest counties on Wednesday but was pushed back in a close vote. Keeping fluoride out of drinking water has quickly become a priority once again for Republicans across the state and nation.

Cities such as Melbourne, Port St. Lucie, Stuart, and Tavares have dropped fluoride over the past few months, taking their guidance from a directive issued by Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo in November. Ladapo recommended against community water fluoridation “due to the neuropsychiatric risk associated with fluoride exposure.”

Hillsborough County will not follow the examples of some other communities in the state and will keep fluoride in the drinking water, at least for now.

A decades old debate over fluoride in drinking water has resurfaced in Hillsborough County. Commissioners voted on whether to remove fluoride from the public water supply with supporters calling it a public health necessity and opponents warning of potential risk.
