The owner of the building that served as the exterior of Sarah Jessica Parker's apartment made the request with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission after the stoop has continued to be a "global tourist destination.

According to the owner in her application letter, people graffitied the steps of her stoop and carved their initials into the doorframe over the years.
