Microsoft has moved surprisingly quickly to bring R1 to its Azure customers.

Microsoft made DeepSeek's groundbreaking R1 AI model available on the Azure AI Foundry platform as well as GitHub.

Microsoft has added DeepSeek R1 to its Azure AI Foundry and GitHub model catalog, enhancing its collection of over 1,800 AI models. The model aims to improve AI reasoning and streamline development with tools for quick experimentation and security assessments.

Both OpenAI and Microsoft are reportedly probing the Chinese startup to check if it accessed and used OpenAI’s technology to build its R1 reasoning large language model.

Distilled R1 models can now run locally on Copilot Plus PCs, starting with Qualcomm Snapdragon X first and Intel chips later. This brings a lot more AI capabilities to Windows, and it’s something Microsoft was already working on with its Phi Silica language models.

Initially, it will be available on PCs with Qualcomm Snapdragon X, followed by computers with Intel Core Ultra 200V and other devices. Microsoft will also add the R1 model to its Azure AI Foundry platform,
