Players and fans felt the impact of high temperatures at Wimbledon when Thursday’s semifinal match between top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova was delayed twice in the first set because of spectators feeling unwell.
Temperatures reached 84 degrees at Wimbledon, with many fans sitting directly in the sun. The brief pauses in action distracted from what was an excellent first set. Both Sabalenka and Anisimova traded games early before Anisimova broke through to pick up an early 6-4 win.
The other semifinal features two prominent names in women’s tennis — Iga Świątek (No. 8 seed) and Bencic (who upset 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva, the No. 7 seed). This is as far as Świątek and Bencic have made it at Wimbledon, and the Swiss player has done it just over a year after having a daughter, Bella.
