A bill to clarify Texas' near total abortion ban passed significant hurdles this week. The so-called 'Life of the Mother Act' looks to make sure the law is applied consistently across the state.

The bill also contains a controversial provision that says it cannot be challenged in state court before it is enforced. It goes now to the House for a full vote.

That bill passed the Texas Senate in mid-April. An amended version passed the Texas House, with a narrower margin than the abortion clarification bill. The clarification legislation received widespread support from a variety of lawmakers and advocacy groups, to a degree that’s unusual for an abortion-related bill.
