U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna has formally referred Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to the Department of Justice for criminal investigation over allegedly misleading Congress about a taxpayer-funded renovation project.

Powell has been accused of lying to Congress about the project after he testified last month that there would be no "VIP dining room," "new marble," or "special elevators," despite government planning documents indicating otherwise.

The referral comes just days before a planned visit by members of the Trump administration to the Fed’s headquarters to inspect the renovations, a project that has drawn intense scrutiny from conservative lawmakers and Trump allies.
