The Karangahake Gorge has a number of different walkways and we enjoyed the rail tunnel loop. This includes going through a long, pitch dark tunnel where glow worms can be seen on the roof if no one …Full review by Nigel B

Fantastic walks, we did the Rail Tunnel Loop. Is 3.2kms long and takes just over an hour to do. The highlight is walking through the 1km tunnel of where once the train went along. The path goes over …Full review by Paul M

Hi, We will be visiting from California and are trying to plan the "best" way to see this amazing gorge. We would like to bike so to take in more, perhaps Karangahake to Owharoa Falls, but really don't know if this makes sense if we are hiring bikes and a shuttle to return us to Karangahake (saw a service we could book for this). Would this path give as a good sampling of the beauty and history, or is it too much? Not even sure if there is an "exit" at the falls or near. Or maybe we are really just as well of to walk the 2.5km loop..... Visiting in mid-September. Hoping to do the visit in four hours or less. Thank You!

Hi! We have visited Karangahake many times as our daughter lives just a few miles away at Paeroa. We live in UK. We have always walked and never had to use bicycles. In fact in places you would find it difficult with a bike as the riverside path descends down steps etc. We have walked from both ends but never walked the full length at any one time but I think you could do it in the time you suggest. The little museum en route would add time to the walk of course. Hope that helps. Graham

Hi, it would depend on what walks/areas you chose to do. The walk from Karangahake Gorge thru to Dickeys flat is about 1.5hrs each way very approximately. It depends on how fast you walk etc. The other walks are signposted and give approx, times. Spending a few hours there you could still see alot of the different tracks etc.
We love cycling and it appears this would be a great place to cycle on our trip. Are bikes easy to rent at the Gorge or do people rent them somewhere nearby and bring them in? Also how much of the area can you cycle through?

Hi, bikes are easy to rent in the towns along the rail trail, we rented ours from our starting point at Thanes, but you could also rent them from Paeroa near the Gorge. Just google the rail trail people, I think it was Waiheke Rail Trail, my reviews on this will have the correct info if my memory isn't accurate. We cycled the whol rail trail and it was great, but the Gorge was the highlight - incredibly scenic.. However the track from the end of the tunnel into the Girge isn't really rideable - it's very narrow and rough with a sheer drop in parts, and shared with pedestrians. So we left our bikes at the end of the tunnel and walked in - lovely walk and lots to see at the end, with old gold mine ruins and shafts to explore.
